Languedoc-Roussillon, France
ESTATE
Le Roc Des Anges was established by Marjorie in 2001 in the mountainous region of Pyrenees in Roussillon when she was 23 years old. Originally from Côte Rotie, she sought out to establish a biodynamic wine sanctuary in a region that is dominated by co-ops and fortified wine production.
Marjorie and Stéphane met in agronomy school of Montpellier at the horse club. Both fell in love and sealed their journey in wine and moved to Roussillon upon graduation. Stéphane joined in 2008 to help and began their fortified project ‘Terres de Fagayra’ in Maury. The team’s intuition and contemplation manifest in the wines with an integral focus of purity and elegance. The wines are relatively low in alcohol, minimalistic, single-site and varietal that aims to reflect terroir and variety. In the glass, the wines are often mistaken as the best of Loire, Rhône and Beaujolais.
VINEYARD WORK
Marjorie’s vineyards are a collection of abandoned and old vines with extremely low yields planted on large plates of granite and schiste. Varieties include Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault, Sirene, Rousanne, Marsanne, Grenache Gris, Macabeu. The domaine has been biodynamically farmed since 2011 on these mountain ranges, which creates an extreme day and night temperature difference, resulting in balance of sugar and acid development within each berry.
WINEMAKING
Vinification decisions are made based on vintage and material - stem-inclusion, extraction methods and degree, elevage time. The principle steps across the range remain since the beginning are gentle indigenous yeast fermentation, long elevage, no finning nor filtering at bottling.
